GIS

The Geografical Information Systems (GIS) allow to combine conventional data bases with geographical maps. Thus additional information can be obtained which otherwise could not be retrieved from the mere data bases or the maps alone. A GIS data bases can be queried in order to get information on a geographical unit and, vice versa, new data bases can be generated processing the contents of a map.

From the beginning of the 90's, the scientific and non scientific world have shown an increasing interest in GIS. Traditionally tedious procedures as the creation of geographic maps are now resolved in a fast and straight forward manner, the continous updating of desperately thematic maps becomes now an affordable task.

In the branch Informatics for Geosciences GIS play a central role.

Services

  • Acquisition, digitalization and georeferentiation of exsiting geographical maps.
  • Importation of existing data base in GIS.
  • Production of thematic maps.
  • Acquisition of satellite and airborne data.
  • Training on GIS.

Environment and GIS

We apply GIS in the following fields of envirnomental problems:

  • Maps concerning seismic hazard (ShakyGround)
  • Description, maintainance and management of forests (Software: FIS)
  • Prevention, prediction, emergency and risk management of fires
  • Monitoring, surveillance of landslides, construction of maps concerning landslide risk
  • Monitoring, modeling and surveillance of industrial risk (software IRAP)
  • Management of air pollution (software SLAB View)
  • Management environmental resources
  • Waste management (software WDM)
  • Assessment of environmental impact
  • Aquifer and groundwater modelling
  • Environmental consulting

GISonLINE

With GISonLine the user may visualize GIS maps via our Internet – servers. The use of Internet together with GIS discloses new dimensions for this technology: information broadcasting and delivering becomes easier and faster.

With GISonLine geographically separated departments of Civil Protection, Fire Protection and similar institutions may access to the various geographical data bases improving their co-operation in their common tasks of industrial and natural hazard prevention and mitigation.
