Maintenance of cultural assets with Winsimul

Seismic Characterization of S. Domenico Convent and Church (Ct)

In Italy there is approximately 1/3 of the artistic patrimony of the world. It's fundamental to safeguard it in the best way. With Winsimul it's possible to know which it will be the earthquake impact on an artistic area; in this way it will be possible to planning the interventions and to safeguard the assets. There is an example of the software application to a monumental building: a baroque church and convent in the centre of Catania (Italy).

In the planning of conservation and recovery of the church and convent of S. Domenico, a study has been made to verify the site response, the seismic impact and the breaking strains from an earthquake. The project has been divided in several parts in compliance with the regulation in force in matter of interventions in high seismic risk areas planning, using the WINSIMUL 1.0 software (©Mestor Snc - Catania - http://www.mestor.com), to obtain - using data deriving from ground circular cutouts and two "input" earthquakes - the breaking strain response of really events or project planning.

The project is divided in:

  • Data collection obtained from perforations and laboratory tests to know thickness, Vs, density and important geotechnical parameters of the S. Domenico under ground layers.
  • Choice and characterization of most important events in the South East Sicily seismic history.
  • Simulations using the Winsimul 1.0 application.
  • Results production and interpretation.
  • Accelerations, Speed, Movement, Event Duration, Magnitudo of same points.
  • Response spectra
  • Shaking cards at 2,5 and 10Hz for two earthquakes.

The job is available in a pdf file (only in Italian)
